I started a bunch of things, got distracted and then got home late, but I did collect a Duck egg today! Pretty impressive since they had so much going on, and still they laid and egg. No picture because my camera also got distrtacted...battery is charging so maybe tomorrow!
We have talked about raising goats, and go back and forth on the idea. I'm leary of getting a milking animal, because while we are home much more than in our previous life, we still do take off for long periods of time and milking animals need to be milked on a regular schedule. So why I'm considering taking the Goat Husbandry class at Jenness Farm is beyond me! Maybe I'm becoming addicted to taking homesteading classes, maybe I have convinced myself that information is beneficial even if you don't actually buy goats, maybe husband really likes the idea...at any rate, there is a class being held on Sunday May 17th, starting at 2pm at Jenness Farm. The class is going to cover:
- Breeds
- Fencing and Housing needs
- Feeding Plans
- Breeding/Kid Care
- Illness/Disease
- Vet Care vs. Care you can provide
- Parasite Control
- Milking
- Showing Goats
- Hands on Demo Hoof Trimming
- Hands on Demo Administering Shots
The class is $35.00 and questions are encouraged!
You can register by calling (603) 942-8051, payment due upon registration.
I keep telling my husband that when he retires from the Navy we are going to buy a farm (working or not at the time of purchase doesn't matter, within a few years it will be a full working one)And we will grow corn, soybeans, and cotton (depending on where we retire) and we will raise Goats and sheep. He thinks I'm totally NUTS. I told him that I want to be able to give back to the world and the things that I grow and animals that I raise have to be completely consumable- used for both food and fibers. Someday he will come around (though I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to be a farmer and a midwife but I'm sure God will work it all out since He is the one that put the desire there- I just have to trust that He knows how it's all gonna go 10 years from now)
I need to start researching classes like you've been able to go to around here (though I've never heard of any other than some college courses at the community college) But even if you don't plan on getting any goats in the near future I'm pretty sure goat husbandry doesn't change too much, I'm sure other than more technology they are basically raised the same as they were back when Noah put 'em on the arc.
