The Muscovy Ducklings are coming into their own. They were so worried, always scurrying away from "Mr Muscovy", the bossy drake who tormented them for fun. But now they are getting some size, their legs under them, so to speak, and have found he's not that concerning, as long as you give him his due respect.
I've been trying to get them to forage more, so I've been throwing a small amount of grain into the lawn area. This has worked, they now keep a section of the lawn pretty well mowed, and the amount of grain it takes to entice them, is about 2 cups a day, so it's been quite successful. I do still give them grain at night, but before my attempts at teaching them to forage, I was hearing their noisy Cayuga friends quacking all day, and the all the ducks would rush me when they saw me enter the yard, in the hope of grain.
Now they forage, wander, lie in the sun on the picnic bench...
Yes, they are quite at home now.
We had a sad thing happen yesterday. One was killed and two more were wounded. We think it was a dog attack because the dead one was killed but not eaten, and the attack happened around 10am, so not typical predator time. One of the wounded will be fine, just missing some tail feathers, it seems, but the other has a hurt leg, so we will have to see what to do with him. I hate that this happened.
