Brookford Farm, where I get my dairy products, had a Party today! Quark is a cheese type item and today was a whole festival centering around this wonderful treat. We went as a family, and the girls loved it. Mini was so excited to go on the hayride.
We took a farm tour, via a tractor drawn hayride, and it was a beautiful journey. We saw the pigs, happily tilling up the fields that have stopped producing for the year. Then we traveled on to the field that holds their NH Red Chickens, in a chicken tractor made out of an 18 wheeler trailer! Brilliant.
There were crafts for the kids, a hay maze, delicious food made by very talented chef's, that used the Quark. Black Trumpet made a fabulous lamb kabob with herbed quark! My favorite quark goodie was a slice of pumpkin pie that had a layer of quark between the pumpkin and the crust! I ran into several of my fellow locavores, along the way. I love brookford Farm!
One of the highlights was my new still life. Sophie and Jarrod of Applegard Farm were set up at a table of produce, where you could select 3-5 veggies to create a still life, and then one of the two talented artists would do a quick charcoal drawing for you, while you watched, or you could come back later for it. Mini and I selected the veggies for Sophie to draw, and ours is now hanging in the kitchen.
The other day I picked Autumn Olives, and I'll share more about those this week, but while I was out I found an apple tree, in the parking lot of a restaurant, that was loaded with apples. I stopped to ask if I could pick them, and was granted permission. I gave them quite an entertaining show, in return. Standing on the roof of my car, shaking branches, to drop as many apples as I could, had to be quite a site. In the end I filled the trunk with apples that will be perfect for apple cider, which my family will be very excited about, being the big fans they are of apple cider!
